Driver’s License Renewal in the Philippines

Davao City, Philippines —

I decided to renew my driver’s license inside SM Davao, where the Land Transportation Office (LTO) renewal center is located. It was around 11:10 in the morning when I arrived and I expected a huge crowd. To my surprise, it was almost a deserted government office. I headed straight for my medical examination, there was less than 10 people waiting. After getting my medical certificate, I proceeded to window 1 of LTO. I just informed the officer-in-charge of the changes in my status and surname. Unlike before, there are no more application forms to fill up. The whole process took me less than 30 minutes. However, since they ran out of plastic cards, I can claim my card after 3 long months. They even informed me that they’ll print it upon claiming.

Step by step on renewing driver’s license in the Philippines:

  1. Show your driver’s license card and pay ₱200 at the cashier. They’ll give you a priority number for medical examination.
  2. Wait for your number to be called.
  3. Proceed to the medical examination room to secure a medical certificate. The doctor will then ask you to read the Snellen chart and then, check your blood pressure.
  4. Once secured, proceed to the waiting area beside Kidzoona for the releasing if queuing numbers at 10AM. Senior citizens, pregnant women, PWD applications should proceed directly to LTO.
  5. Go to the LTO, with you the queuing number, medical certificate, and original driver’s license.
  6. Wait for your name to be called at Window 2 for picture taking and digital signature.
  7. Pay the necessary amount at Window 3.
  8. Again, wait for your name to be called. The releasing officer at Window 4 will give you your receipt, which serves as a temporary license, and advise you when to claim your card-type driver’s license.
